A Guide to Surgery In General

All surgery requires the set of medical tools in the Operating Theatre, along with an operating table: OpTable.gif. Ideally, only Soteria Doctors and the Chief Biolab Overseer can perform advanced surgery. Remember to let each step complete fully, lest you like playing dangerously and want to any% that surgery risk harming yourself or your patient.

Field Surgery

Generally, this should only be put into play if you are unable to reach Medbay or the operating rooms (e.g. Medbay is full of spiders, exploded or both otherwise) and surgery needs to be done immediately. Since you likely won't have a proper operating table at hand, a more serviceable option than the floor would be a Roller bed Rollerbed.png, with the greatest chance of success outside properly suited surfaces. However, if even that convenience isn't an option, any table Table.png will work. Putting the patient in an aggressive grab and clicking the table will lay them on the table, from there you should probably instruct them to rest or else they'll just get back up. If possible, remove any existing air tank from their outfit (check pockets too), put a tank of anesthetic Anesthetics.png on their back with a mask on their face BreathingMask.png, turn it on, and get to it (All done by click-dragging your patient's sprite to yours and having the appropriate items in your hand). Or just fill them up with Tramadol. Patients generally do not like watching their insides get manipulated.

The tools you use will also determine the success of each surgery, with a scalpel Scalple.png having the highest chance of success, a sharp knife Knife.png being passable, while some vaguely sharp object like a glass shard GlassShard.png will have issues.

Surgical Tools

Surgery tools aren't common and are pretty much only found in the operating rooms or printed from an autolathe with the correct disk. The "ghetto" tools can be found just about everywhere.

Infection

Wear gloves and wash your hands before every surgery. Failure to do so will result in giving your patient an infection which, if left untreated, can be deadly. Apply ointment to the afflicted areas quickly if you fail to wash your hands before starting surgery. Make sure to clean your tools after every surgery as well with a spray bottle of either space cleaner or sterilizine If you use a syringe on a patient, dispose of it. Never re-use a syringe, else you risk giving the patient an infection. You don’t want to spread infection.

Prepping for Surgery

Please ensure that your patients are properly diagnosed and scanned in a body scanner before starting the operation, and that all medications and personnel needed for the procedure have been prepared.

  1. Find a suitable operating table.
  2. Make sure you're wearing latex gloves and a sterile mask.
  3. Ask the person to strip, or clickdrag them onto your body and click on all of their items to remove them.
  4. Grab the person and click on the operating table to lay them down on it.
  5. Place an anesthetic tank on the medical stand and wrench it into place.
  6. Check the Operating Computer to ensure the patient is positioned properly; if the monitor does not show the patient's vitals, the surgery will not work.
  7. Clickdrag from the medical stand onto the patient to place the mask over their face and then click on the medical stand to open the valve.
    1. Alternatively, pick up a medical mask and sleeping agent.
    2. Clickdrag their body onto yours to view their inventory. Place the medical mask on their mask slot and the tank of nitrous on their back.
    3. Clickdrag their body onto yours once again to refresh the window. A new option called Set Internals will appear towards to bottom. Clicking it will turn on the anesthetics after a short while.
  8. Examine the patient until it reports that they are unconscious, alternatively view the Operating Computer until their status reads 'Non-Responsive'.
  9. Make sure you're set on the Help intent.
  10. Use a sink to wash your hands. Unclean hands can result in an infected wound. This is treatable with ointment.

Surgery List

There are many different types of surgeries that can be performed. Sometimes it will be necessary to have the patient hooked up to an IV or someone on standby to inject medications during the procedure.

Opening a Surgical Site

The first steps of most surgeries.

  1. (Optional) Complete Prepping for Surgery.
  2. Aim for the location in the Damage Zone.
  3. Use the Scalple.png scalpel to create an incision.
  4. Use your ERetractor.png retractors to lift up the skin.
  5. Use the EHemostat.png hemostat to stop any potential bleeding.

For internal work in chest and skull only:

  1. Use the ESaw.png bone saw to cut through the bone.
  2. Use your ERetractor.png retractors to move the bone aside.

GHETTO:

  • Scalple.png Scalpel - Knife 50%, glass shard 20%

Closing a Surgical Site

The final steps of most surgeries.

If you had to use the ESaw.png bone saw earlier (chest/head):

  1. Use your ERetractor.png retractors to put the bones back into place.
  2. Apply EBone setter.png bone setter to mend their ribcage/skull unless the bone was fractured during the sawing phase, in which case, conduct bone repair before continuing.

Then after the above (or if it was not required):

Bone Repair

The mending of broken bones and fractures.

  1. (Optional) Complete Prepping for Surgery.

  3. Ensure the target limb doesn't have any damage, otherwise the bone will break again.
  4. Use your ERetractor.png retractors to remove any bone shards.
  5. Apply EBone setter.png bone setter to set the bone in place.
  6. Use the EBone setter.png bone setter to finish mending the bone.

  1. (Optional) Complete Prepping for Surgery.
  2. Aim for the patient's affected (missing) limb using the Damage zone.png Damage Zone.
  3. If patient has Limb Stump, use ESaw.png Circular Saw to cut it off, otherwise skip this step.
  4. Attach the appropriate limb, either mechanical or organic.
  5. Use EHemostat.pngHemostat to reconnect the nerves.
  6. Use a ATK.png trauma kit if the patient requires one (may need to be applied to either the new limb, or the 'parent' body part it was attached to).
  7. Ensure the patient is able to manipulate their new limb before releasing them.

Implant/Shrapnel Removal

Removing implants from the body. Also removal of things from body cavities.

  1. (Optional) Complete Prepping for Surgery.
  2. Aim for the implant location on the Damage Zone.
  3. Perform the steps in Opening a Surgical Site.

  5. Perform the steps in Closing a Surgical Site.

GHETTO:

  • EHemostat.png Hemostat - Wirecutters 75%, fork 20%, pliers

Cavity Surgery

Putting things inside peoples' body cavities. Not that thing, not those cavities.

Maxiumum size of item that fits inside:

  3. Perform the steps in Opening a Surgical Site.

Removing an organ:

  1. Use the Scalple.png scalpel. This will open up a window asking you which organ you'd like to cut loose.
  2. Use the EHemostat.png 'hemostat. This will open up a window asking you which loose organ you'd like to remove.

  5. Repeat scalpel and scan procedure for all affected areas.
  6. Right click the Autopsy scanner.png autopsy scanner to print out autopsy data.

Hardsuit Removal

Cutting the seals on a sealed hardsuit so that it can be removed from the person wearing it.

  1. Place the patient or cadaver onto the operating table. Cleanliness is not required.
  2. Aim for the chest in the Damage Zone.
  3. Use a plasma cutter, EWelder.png welding tool to burn the hardsuit seals open. This may take several attempts.
  4. Pull the hardsuit control module off their back.

Synthetic Patients

Soteria_Roboticist Guide to robo-surgery.

Many of the same steps as listed above should be practiced on synthetic crew. While they may not bleed or have the risk of infection. Proper protocol should be followed. Also remember that "Screwdrivers EScrewdriver.png having a 30% chance to fail." It is best to operate with nano-paste ENanopaste.png when available. As screw driver fails can cause further damage.
